JUSTIN & CODY'S STORY -- the Micro-Premies

Justin and Cody are fraternal twins--but not just ordinary twins. They were premature--born at 25 weeks gestation(just over 6 months). Justin was 1 # 4 ounces at birth, and Cody was 1 # 6 ounces. After birth they lost down to 15 ounces, before they finally started gaining weight. Many babies that small do not survive.

Justin

Justin, as mentioned above started out at 1# 4 ounces. He required surgery in those first few weeks--40 % of his small intestine had to be removed(lost it's blood supply). He has struggled to maintain appropriate weight gain over his first 10 years of life, but with a lot of encouragement and supplements, he has thrived.

He is now 12 years old. He has played soccer for a number of years, tried football one year, and now plays basketball and runs track.

He has ADHD, but with careful titration of his medicine he is now doing very well in school, many times making the honor roll.

Cody

Cody, as mentioned above was the "big" brother at 1 # 6 ounces. He has done very well, as far as his weight gain and development. He started his growth spurt earlier than most of the kids his age.

He is now 12 years old, and over the last year, he gained 3 1/2 inches and 37#. He has played soccer for several years, and also plays basketball and football for his school team.

He also has ADHD and some Learning Differences. He has struggled a little more, academically, than his brother. With multiple, minor adjustments in his medication, he is now doing well at school.

Cody and Justin lost their Mother to cancer when they were 9 years old. They lived for a short time with their Grandmother in Louisiana. After she was no longer able to take care of them, they have now come to live with their Aunt and Uncle in Texas, and are both doing very well.
