Adult ADD is diagnosed in the same way as Childhood ADD. The wording of the Behavior Rating Scales is a little different, but the actual behaviors are the same.
Additionally, for Adults, it's important to note that the behaviors must have begun in childhood--before age 7, according to DSM-IV. I'm not certain how they picked 7. Most kids seem to be born with the hyperactivity and impulsiveness. It's difficult to pick up the attention problem until child begins school.
Adults don't just suddenly develop Adult ADD. If the symptoms seem to start suddenly in later life, you need to look for a different diagnosis.
